USAA Federal Savings Bank contributed $25,000 on July 25 for the Violence Intervention Program offered through Family Violence Prevention Services.

FVPS's Honoring Mother's Luncheon honoring Ms. Rosie Castro and Ms. Nelda Benninger was held on May 5, and was a great success. Keynote speaker, Ms. Denise Brown provided a touching and personal look into the impact domestic violence played in her family's life. FVPS was awarded $90,000 in May by the Criminal Justice Division of the Governor's Office. These federal Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) dollars are distributed to states to serve victims of domestic violence. Funding granted to FVPS will be used to support its unique Court and Military Liaison Program.  

 

FVPS received $20,000 in May from the Bill and Sally McNutt Foundation. This contribution will support services provided at the Battered Women and Children's Shelter. Sincere thanks to Ms. Janet McNutt and the Board of the Bill and Sally McNutt Foundation for their continued support of FVPS.

 

WNBA Silver Stars athlete, Becky Hammon and the Hammonites, her loyal fans, teamed up to donate $3,690. The William Knox-Holt Foundation made a gift of $5000 in March for FVPS programs and services.  The Foundation is a long-time financial supporter of the agency. 

 

Family violence rises, becomes more brutal - A San Antonio Express-News article, on Sunday, March 7, highlights the parallel increase in the number of incidents of family violence and the level of brutality involved. FVPS's director, Marta Pelaez, is quoted saying that "this is unlike anything we've ever seen". The article also emphasizes that while the number of victims seeking shelter has increased sharply, the amount of donations has dropped significantly. To read the full article click here.

 

 

D'Anthony Salonspa owner Diane Diaz de Leon presented a check for $8000 following their successful 2010 Hair Show benefitting the Battered Women and Children's Shelter. Marta Peláez, Chief Executive Officer, accepted on behalf of FVPS on March 2. "I hope this money will help meet the needs of women and children who are hurting and praying for a safer future...a future that is free of violence," Diaz de Leon said. Effective September 1, 2009, new legislation in Texas requires that family violence offenders pay mandatory fees of $100 to HHSC-funded family violence centers. Family Violence Prevention Services, Inc., is the only agency in Bexar County eligible to receive these payments, which can be made in the administrative offices at 7911 Broadway, San Antonio.
