Substance Abuse Intervention Program (SAIP)
Reconnecting Youth and Parenting Wisely
SAIP is a FVPS program funded by the Texas Department of State Health Services. SAIP services are provided at no charge to participants.
Reconnecting Youth identifies and recruits high-risk teenage youth in school-based and community settings. Reconnecting Youth addresses four skill-training units that include self-esteem enhancement, decision-making, personal control, and interpersonal communication. The program is designed to achieve 3 goals:
- *Increase school performance
- *Decrease substance abuse
- *Increase mood management (depression, aggression, etc.)
Program qualifications:
- Minor alcohol and/or drug use by student
- Family violence or runaways
- High school absenteeism
- Legal problems (juvenile probation, etc.)
- Behind in credits earned for grade level
- Poor social skills
Parenting Wisely is a 10-week program that addresses the needs of parents of at-risk adolescents, increasing knowledge about effective parenting behaviors. Parenting Wisely is designed to achieve three goals:
- *Enhance parent communication skills
- *Increase parental knowledge and use of appropriate and effective parenting techniques
- *Promote healthy family interactions
Services Provided:
- Individual, family, and group counseling
- Home and school visitation
- Community Activities
- Community Education
- Advocacy and referral to community resources

Substance Abuse Warning Signs:
- Sudden change in personality
- Changes in relationships
- History of substance abuse in the family
- Trouble with law enforcement
- Problems at school
- Dishonesty and lying
- Changes in appetite, sleep habits, or appearance
- Rebelliousness or violent behavior
- Drug use among friends
- Finding drug paraphernalia
