Safety Alert - Telephone and Computer Usage on the Internet
The telephone plays a critical role in the lives of many victims of family violence. Sometimes the phone serves as a vital lifeline to safety and emergency assistance. But at other times the phone may trigger the suspicion and anger of an abusive partner. Sometimes the phone is the only means for arranging a way out. But at other times the phone may become a tool used to threaten and harass the victim.
The telephone has new memory-based services that can help protect a victim, but could also aid an abusive partner. Increase your knowledge of these safety features by contacting your local phone (usually AT&T in San Antonio) and increase your ability to survive and to find a way out.
Computer Use can be monitored and is impossible to completely clear. If you are afraid your internet and/or computer usage might be monitored, please use a safer computer such as a public library or a trusted friend's computer. This also includes e-mail.
